AI careers are open to more students than most families think. PCM students can take B.Tech in Computer Science or AI through JEE, students from any stream with Class 10 Maths can apply to IIT Madras's online BS in Data Science, and PCB, Commerce and Humanities students have routes into bioinformatics, data analytics and AI policy. Pay is strong for core skills: a 2026 TeamLease Digital report puts the median for entry-level GenAI developers at βΉ11.2 LPA, though support-level roles start much lower.
This guide covers which AI careers exist, which stream and course lead to each, how to choose a college, what the salary data actually says, and what your child can start learning now.

Why Are AI Careers Growing So Fast?
The numbers from global and Indian research point the same way:
-
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects 170 million new jobs and 92 million displaced by 2030, and ranks AI and big data as the fastest-growing skills. AI and machine learning specialists are among the fastest-growing jobs.
-
A Deloitte and nasscom report estimates that India's demand for AI talent will grow from about 6 lakh in 2022 to more than 12.5 lakh by 2027.
-
According to the Stanford AI Index 2025, India had the world's highest year-on-year growth in AI hiring (33.4%) in 2024 and ranked second in AI skill penetration.
-
The government has backed this with the IndiaAI Mission, a βΉ10,372 crore programme over five years, including more than 10,000 GPUs of shared computing power for startups, researchers and universities.
Growth does not mean every "AI" job is easy to get. The same TeamLease Digital report notes that entry-level tech support roles are being squeezed while core AI skills earn a premium. The students who do best are those who build strong fundamentals, not just a certificate.

What AI Careers Can Students Choose?
"AI career" covers many different jobs. The main ones:
-
Machine learning engineer: builds and deploys models that learn from data. Needs strong maths and programming.
-
Generative AI developer: builds products using large language models, such as chatbots, copilots and search tools.
-
Data scientist: finds patterns in data and turns them into decisions, combining statistics, programming and business sense.
-
Data engineer: builds the pipelines and systems that collect and prepare data for AI.
-
AI research scientist: develops new methods; usually needs a master's or PhD.
-
Data analyst: answers business questions with data and dashboards; a common entry route for Commerce students with Maths.
-
AI product manager: decides what AI products should do and works between engineers, designers and users.
-
AI ethics, law and policy specialist: works on regulation, privacy and responsible AI; suits Humanities and law students.
-
Bioinformatics and computational biology specialist: applies AI to genetics, drug discovery and healthcare; a strong route for PCB students. See our guide to Biology careers beyond MBBS.
Which Stream Should You Take in Class 11 for an AI Career?
PCM is the most direct route to engineering and research roles. B.Tech admission through JEE Main requires Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, and most core AI work relies on maths topics such as statistics, probability and linear algebra. Our guide on choosing between PCM, PCB and PCMB explains the trade-offs.
CBSE schools can also offer Artificial Intelligence (subject code 843) as an elective in Classes 11 and 12. It is a useful introduction, but it does not replace Maths for engineering admissions.
Not taking PCM does not close the door. IIT Madras's BS in Data Science and Applications is open to students from any stream who studied Maths and English in Class 10, with no JEE needed. Commerce students with Maths can move into data analytics, and PCB students can move into bioinformatics. If your child is unsure, start with our guide on how to pick a stream after Class 10.

AI product, policy, ethics, business analytics |
Choosing a college: dedicated AI degrees are relatively new in India. IIT Hyderabad launched what was reported as India's first full B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence in 2019-20, with 20 seats. Many colleges now add "AI" to course names, so look past the label:
-
Check the college's rank in the NIRF rankings for engineering or universities.
-
Read the syllabus: does it include maths, statistics and real projects, or only tool-based modules?
-
Look at the faculty's experience and recent placement data, including median (not just highest) salaries.
-
A strong CSE degree from a good college is often a better choice than an AI-branded degree from a weaker one. Our engineering admissions guide explains the entrance routes.
How Much Do AI Professionals Earn in India?
Pay in AI varies widely by skill level and employer. The most recent large dataset, TeamLease Digital's Digital Skills and Salary Primer FY2026-27, reports these medians:
|
Role (category) |
0 to 2 years experience |
6 to 8 years experience |
|---|---|---|
|
GenAI developer (AI core) |
βΉ11.2 LPA |
βΉ34.5 LPA |
|
Data engineer (AI adjacent) |
βΉ9.1 LPA |
βΉ29.6 LPA |
|
Technical support engineer (AI support) |
βΉ5.2 LPA |
βΉ14.6 LPA |
Source: TeamLease Digital via YourStory, September 2026. Entry-level AI core roles at global capability centres had a median of βΉ13.2 LPA, while AI support roles started at βΉ4.8 to 5.4 LPA.
Two things stand out. First, core skills pay: by 6 to 8 years, GenAI, ML and data science roles reach about βΉ31 to 35 LPA, nearly double support roles. Second, the gap is a skills gap: the report found only about 16% of IT professionals have AI skills. Salaries depend on the college, city, employer and, most of all, what the person can actually build.
What Skills Should Students Start Building in School?
The WEF expects 39% of workers' existing skills to change or become outdated by 2030, so the best preparation is a strong foundation plus the habit of learning:
-
Maths, especially in Classes 9 to 12: algebra, probability and statistics are the base of machine learning.
-
Programming: start with block coding in middle school, then move to Python by Class 8 or 9. CBSE has introduced a computational thinking and AI curriculum for Classes 3 to 8 from 2026-27, so many students will meet these ideas early.
-
Projects: small, real projects (a quiz app, a data chart about their school, a simple chatbot) teach more than certificates.
-
Communication and ethics: explaining results clearly and thinking about fairness and privacy are what separate good AI professionals from average ones.
-
English reading: most AI documentation and courses are in English.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I get into AI without Maths in Class 12?
Some routes, yes. IIT Madras's BS in Data Science needs only Maths in Class 10, and roles in AI product, policy and analytics are open to other streams. But core engineering and research roles need strong maths, so students without Class 12 Maths should plan to build it through bridge courses.
2. Is a B.Tech in AI better than a B.Tech in Computer Science?
Not automatically. CSE covers the same foundations and keeps more options open, and many colleges let CSE students specialise in AI later. Choose based on college quality, syllabus and placements rather than the course name.
3. Can a PCB student build a career in AI?
Yes. Bioinformatics, computational biology and AI in healthcare value biology knowledge, and PCB students can add programming and statistics during their degree. See Biology careers beyond MBBS.
4. What is the starting salary for AI jobs in India?
It depends on the role. A 2026 TeamLease Digital report puts the median for entry-level GenAI developers at βΉ11.2 LPA and for AI support roles at βΉ4.8 to 5.4 LPA. Salaries at top colleges and global firms can be higher; others are lower.
5. Will AI replace the jobs students are training for?
AI will change many jobs, but the WEF still expects a net gain of 78 million jobs by 2030, with AI and data roles among the fastest growing. Students who understand how AI works and can apply it in a field they care about are best placed.
6. When should we start career planning for AI?
Class 9 or early Class 10 is ideal, before stream selection. A one-on-one session can help match interests to the right route; read whether career counselling is worth it to decide.
