Before this invention, every phone call had to be connected manually by a human operator. On this day in 1892, the first automatic system was installed in La Porte, Indiana, allowing people to dial numbers directly for the first time. This technology eliminated the need for manual switchboards and laid the foundation for the global, automated telecommunications and internet networks we use today.
