Picture this: French society resembles a magnificent three-tiered cake. The clergy (First Estate) and nobles (Second Estate) ruled the roost, enjoying privileges and paying no taxes. What about the bottom tier? The Third Estate, or everyone else (peasants, merchants, etc.), is stuck with the crumbs, paying all the taxes but having no voice. What a formula for disaster!
Fun Fact: The Third Estate comprised 98% of the population! That's a lot of hangry people!
Storming the Bastille: Bastille Day Bonanza!
King Louis XVI convened a gathering of the Estates-General to address the country's financial issues. The Third Estate wanted equality, but the King wouldn't have it. They organized their own National Assembly and resolved to draft a new constitution. Then, on July 14, 1789, a Paris crowd seized the Bastille jail, a symbol of royal authority. The ultimate "mic drop" event sparked the revolution!
From Monarchy to Mayhem: The Reign of Terror!
The rising of the Jacobins, led by Maximilien Robespierre, cast a pall over the revolution. They desired a republic and were willing to get their hands dirty. King Louis XVI lost his mind (literally), and the Reign of Terror started. Thousands were executed because they opposed the revolution. It was a bloody mess!
Plot twist: Robespierre was finally executed! The revolution consumed its own children.
Napoleon, From Revolution to Emperor
Following the pandemonium, Napoleon Bonaparte, a military genius, stepped in and assumed command. France evolved from monarchy to republic to empire - what a transformation!
Women in the Revolution: Liberty and Equality, but Not for All?
Women took a significant role in the revolution, seeking equality. But, guess what? They didn't receive them. Their political groups were shut down, demonstrating that even revolutions can be sexist.
